FAQ for creator/songwriters (people who create vocals on the mayk.it app)
Why create songs on mayk.it? You’ll be in control of your songs created on mayk.it, meaning you won’t need to search the internet for who is using your songs without the proper license or payment. This will allow you to earn royalties from commercial licensing and streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, YouTube, Amazon Music, Deezer, Pandora, SoundCloud and more! You can also submit your songs to be featured on mayk.it’s official Spotify playlist and others. If your songs do well on mayk.it, they might also be selected for free distribution & promotion opportunities outside of mayk.it.
Who owns your vocal performance aka vocal stems ? You remain the owner of the vocal performance of your creation on mayk.it
Who owns the songs I make with mayk.it? Once an original song has been recorded by a mayk.it creator, it will then be owned by the performer/writer, representing 50% of the ownership and publishing, and the music producer will own the other half of the song, representing 50% of ownership and publishing.
Does mayk.it take any ownership of my songs? mayk.it does not take any ownership of the songs created on the platform, you and the producer are the owners of the song. In the case where a song that was created on the app is qualified to be distributed to music streaming services through our distribution deal, the song will be registered to the rights owners. mayk.it will administer these rights and collect, account and distribute any payments within ninety (90) days after mayk.it has received payment from these DSP’s. mayk.it will take a 20% administration fee for handling these tasks. mayk.it will hold any initial earnings in escrow until you meet the threshold of $100. For paid licensing and other monetization opportunities mayk.it will take a 50% finder’s fee and will notify you once an opportunity like that arises for a song of yours.
Why was my release declined for copyright violation? This indicates that our quality control team unfortunately discovered a potential match or copyright issue that prevents us from distributing your release. This could be due (but not limited to) the following reasons: - Your song was distributed through another service - Your release sounds similar to another release - You are using material that may be at risk of being flagged at any retailer(s) - Contains recognizable lyrical sample or vocal arrangement - Has a pending copyright infringement claim If/when your material is flagged due to any potential copyright reasons, it cannot be distributed. Doing so can lead to potential rights-holder disputes, copyright infringement issues, and/or legality risk. Please do not continue to upload any vocal performances that are flagged as this could lead to a mayk.it account closure.
Are the songs registered with performing rights societies? No, we do not register your song with any performing rights organization. That would be your responsibility. However, if you are creating songs on mayk.it, and one of them hits the top of one of our charts, the song may qualify for distribution through mayk.it. If this situation occurs, we will contact you and confirm that we will register the song for you and register with content ID for possible monetization. mayk.it will then register the song or songs under your name and / or publishing company for content ID and DRM for future collections of royalties
Can I still sell the song? In the case that a song’s lyrics were fully written by you, you (the writer) will be in total control of the song’s writer’s share of the publishing and you may have the ability to transfer ownership to a third party. If you have a song that you would like to have removed because you will be selling the lyrics, you may do so by notifying us at: content@mayk.it. Please note if your song is being distributed through Digital Service Providers, you should login in our partner distribution system to remove the song or make it private yourself or immediately direct the digital service providers to remove the song, however the song may remain available while the digital service providers are processing your take down notice.
What if my songs are already registered with a Performing Rights Organization? In the case where your songs have already been registered with rights societies, you will need to notify mayk.it and arrange for those tracks to be whitelisted for content ID & DRM services before they will be eligible for distribution through mayk.it.
What if my song makes money? In the case where your song is performing well and is selected to be distributed to DSP’s, as an NFT or for commercial license use, or as a sublicense with a licensing fee, mayk.it will collect and administer those royalty payments and distribute the earnings to all parties, including the producer and vocal creator. The splits for these royalties will be as follows: 40% beat producer, 40% vocal writer / performer (if there is only one vocal writer / performer) and 20% for mayk.it for administration, accounting and management of these duties. mayk will hold any initial earnings in escrow until you reach 100$ in earnings.
How many song writers are allowed on a song? You can have as many co-creators aka writers on a song created on mayk.it as you want, as long as the writer’s information is submitted for song distribution. How do I remove my distributed songs? You can login into our distribution partner system to manage your songs. For the mayk.it app itself, you can turn any song private.
What does it take for my song to qualify for mayk.it distribution? Our music team is listening to every song that makes the chart. If we find that the song you created is trending and popular within the community, this will warrant us qualifying it to be distributed through our mayk.it distribution deal. If your song qualifies, we will notify you before mayk.it releases on any DSP’s. If you can’t wait for that, you are able to use your earned gems to distribute your songs to DSP’s yourself via the mayk.it app.
What if I want to release the song on my own through my own distribution deal? mayk.it has the first right to release your track through our own distribution deal. If you’re interested in releasing the track on your own, you will need to request permission from the mayk.it A&R team. You will also need to purchase the beat or a similar beat from the producer. Mayk.it cannot guarantee that the producer will be willing to sell you the beat and, in the case that he or she is willing to sell you the beat, the producer would have to replace the beat on mayk.it with something equal in quality before the sale is final.
What if I want to buy the beat or release the song commercially? mayk.it beats are for community use only. In the case that you want to buy the beat for the song you’ve created, you will need to request permission from the mayk.it A&R team and also purchase the beat or a similar beat from the producer. Mayk.it cannot guarantee that the producer will be willing to sell you the beat and, if they are, the producer will have to replace the beat on mayk.it with something equal in quality before the sale is final.
Can I contact the producer directly for collaboration? Yes. In the case that you find a beat that you really like and want to potentially work directly with the producer, we suggest that you check their producer profile page on mayk.it and reach out to them via direct message on one of the social accounts linked to their profile page.
How can I re-record the song outside of the app? If you are interested in using the beat for a commercial release, you will need to contact the producer via his or her profile page on mayk.it and purchase the beat or a similar beat from the producer.
